Shobhinaw Satyaa: From Assistant Director to Lead Actor in Hanuman Ansh
Shobhinaw Satyaa did not join Hanuman Ansh as its lead actor. He joined the film as a Second Assistant Director, working behind the camera.
But on the first day of shooting, the actor originally cast as Neem Karoli Baba fell ill. Suddenly, the production needed someone to step into the central role.
That is when Satyaa, who had been working behind the scenes, was asked to audition for the part.
After a screen test lasting several hours, he was chosen to play Neem Karoli Baba, turning an unexpected situation into the biggest acting opportunity of his career.
Who Is Shobhinaw Satyaa?

Before Hanuman Ansh brought him into the spotlight, Shobhinaw Satyaa had already spent years working in the film industry.
He is an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, and his industry experience includes working as an assistant director and in continuity supervision. He also trained in acting and later taught at the Opulent School of Acting and Films.
So acting was not an entirely new field for him.
What was missing was the opportunity to take on a major role in front of the camera.
That opportunity came in a way he had never planned for.
How Shobhinaw Satyaa Got the Role of Neem Karoli Baba
When production on Hanuman Ansh began, Satyaa was working as the film’s Second Assistant Director.
The actor originally selected to portray Neem Karoli Baba became unwell on the first day of shooting. Instead of stopping the production, director Vishal Chaturvedi considered whether someone already associated with the project could take over the role.
Satyaa was asked to audition.
According to Chaturvedi, the screen test was conducted at Chitrakoot and lasted more than four hours. Other reports have described it as a nearly five-hour audition. During the test, the director felt Satyaa was able to handle the character and eventually decided to cast him as Neem Karoli Baba.
The transition was almost immediate.
One day, Satyaa was part of the crew working behind the camera.
The next, he was preparing to play the central character in the film.
Why Was Shobhinaw Chosen?
The decision was not based only on the fact that Satyaa was available.
His resemblance to Neem Karoli Baba reportedly caught the attention of the director and members of the crew even before he was considered for the lead. Chaturvedi also said that Satyaa had already rehearsed the script for around 15 days, which meant he was familiar with the material when the unexpected opportunity arrived.
The director also cited specific requirements for the actor portraying Neem Karoli Baba, including being vegetarian, not drinking and not abusing. Satyaa met those conditions as well.
But resemblance and familiarity with the script could only take him so far.
He still had to prove that he could carry the role.
That is what the lengthy audition was ultimately about.
Playing a Revered Spiritual Figure

Getting the role was only the beginning.
Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Maharaj Ji, is a widely revered spiritual figure. Satyaa has spoken about feeling nervous about whether audiences would accept him in such a role, particularly because people already knew him as someone who worked behind the camera.
His preparation also became an immersive experience.
The Indian Express reported that Satyaa stayed at a temple during the shoot and ate food prepared by people from a nearby village. He has described how, over time, he became more comfortable with the role and the environment surrounding the character.
For an actor stepping into a role under such unusual circumstances, the challenge was not simply remembering dialogues. He had to create a believable portrayal of a person who already had a strong place in the public imagination.
From Behind the Camera to the Lead Role
What makes Shobhinaw Satyaa’s journey unusual is that Hanuman Ansh was not his first experience in filmmaking.
He had already worked within the industry.
He had worked as an assistant director. He had experience with continuity. He had studied at FTII. He had trained in acting.
Yet none of that had immediately resulted in a major acting opportunity.
It took an unexpected event on a film set to change that.
Hanuman Ansh released in theatres on August 7, 2026, with Satyaa playing Neem Karoli Baba in the lead. The film’s release subsequently brought considerable attention to his performance and his unusual casting story.
His story is therefore not simply about an assistant director suddenly becoming an actor.
It is about someone who had spent years around filmmaking before finally getting the chance to become its face.
The Savage Humans Take
Shobhinaw Satyaa’s casting in Hanuman Ansh began with circumstances nobody had planned.
The original lead actor fell ill.
A replacement was needed.
Satyaa happened to be there.
But being present was only the first part. He still had to go through a lengthy audition and convince the director that he could carry the role of Neem Karoli Baba.
His years behind the camera, acting training and familiarity with the film all became useful when the opportunity appeared.
